WE ARE FREE IN CHRIST. ABOUT GALATIANS 5. BY FABIAN MASSA.

Freedom in Christ

The Apostle Paul taught the Church of Galatia, and now teaches us about the "Freedom that is in Christ Jesus."
Paul explains in Chapter 5 of Galatians on freedom in the following subjects:

  1. WE ARE FREE OF THE LAW OF THE OLD COVENANT. From 5.1 to 5.12.
  2. WE ARE FREE OF THE FALLEN NATURE From 5.13 to 5.26
  3. CHRIST IN TRUTH HAS RELEASED US.

1. WE ARE FREE OF THE LAW OF THE OLD COVENANT.

5 Therefore, Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure you remain free and do not slave yourself back to the law. Galatians 5.1 NTV.
In this first part, Paul clearly explains that the sacrifice of Christ did not make the Old Testament Covenant free, since we are now in the New Covenant sealed with His Blood (Luke 22:20).
Paul says in Galatians 5: 2-4: "3 I repeat: if you seek to obtain God's favor by circumcision, then you are obliged to obey every one of the ordinances of the law of Moses. 4 For if you pretend to be righteous before God by doing the law, you have been separated from Christ! They have fallen from the grace of God. Galatians 5: 3-5 NTV. Paul is clear, if anyone wants to fulfill 1 single point of the Law as being:

  1. Circumcision
  2. We tithe according to Numbers 18, that is, to tithe by a legalistic obligation. In the New Testament the congregation is responsible for the expenses of the Church and must pay for them, according to 1 Corinthians 161-3, that is, offered for love of God, which is reflected in the love for the Work (the Church ).
  3. Ritual rituals
  4. Ritual washings
  5. Prohibition of certain foods and beverages
  6. Saturday
  7. Festivals and ceremonies proper to Judaism.
  8. Whoever undertakes to comply with one of the points of the Law, is bound to all.

5 However, we who live by the Spirit look forward to receiving by faith the righteousness that God has promised us. 6 For once we put our faith in Christ Jesus, it is of no avail to be circumcised or not. What is important is faith expressed through love.
That is to say, we are not saved by the Works of the Law or by any other work, but by faith in Christ, by believing His Blood cleanses us from all sin. Faith expresses itself through love, that is to treat one's neighbor as oneself. From 5.7 to 12 Paul reinforces the above in front of the Church of Galatia.

2. WE ARE FREE OF THE FALLEN NATURE

If Christ calls us to be "Free" it is because we were slaves of this World, and as such we could not choose how to live, we had no choice. That is why we lived according to the fallen nature, as Paul explains:
19 Everyone knows the behavior of those who obey their bad desires: they are not faithful in marriage, they have forbidden sex, many vices and bad thoughts. 20 They worship false gods, practice witchcraft, and hate others. They fight with each other, are jealous and angry about everything. They are selfish, quarrelsome and divisive. 21 They are envious, they get drunk, and in their festivals they do crazy things and many bad things. I warn you, as I have done before, that those who do this will not be part of the kingdom of God. Galatians 5: 19-21 Bible in Current Language.

A drug addict, an alcoholic, a gambling addict, has no choice of life: He has to submit to his addiction to feel that he is alive. The same can be said of anyone who is tied to conduct that can not change by itself. All these people do not have "Freedom" to choose, but they are slaves of their weaknesses and vices. But now thanks to Christ we are free to choose to live according to the Word of God:

13 Brothers, God called you to be free, but do not use that freedom as a pretext to do evil. On the contrary, help each other out of love. 14 For the whole law of God is summed up in one commandment: "Each one must love his neighbor as he loves himself." 15 I warn you that if you fight and you hurt, you will end up destroying each other . Galatians 5: 13-15 Bible in Current Language.

Paul teaches that we receive from the Holy Spirit the Power to live according to the Scripture:

16 So I say to you, Live by the Spirit, and you will not follow the desires of the sinful nature. 17 For she desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is contrary to her. The two oppose each other, so that you can not do what you want. 18 But if the Spirit leads them, they are not under the law. Galatians 5: 16-18 NIV.

Under the power of the Holy Spirit we have a different fruit:

22 On the other hand, the kind of fruit that the Holy Spirit produces in our lives is love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, humility and self-control. There are no laws against such things!

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed to the cross the passions and desires of the sinful nature and have crucified them there. 25 As we live by the Spirit, let us follow the guidance of the Spirit in every aspect of our life. 26 Let us not make ourselves vain, nor provoke one another, nor be jealous of one another. Galatians 5: 1-2-26 NTV.

3. CHRIST IN TRUTH HAS RELEASED US

Christ has freed us from the Kingdom of Sin and now we are free to choose to live according to the Word of God and it is Christ Himself who gives us the strength and power through the Holy Spirit to live in holiness.
But we must understand that the freedom that God gives us is total, that is to say for all areas of life:

  1. FREE TO PROGRESS IN ALL ORDERS: The Lord has made us free from all power of the enemy who wants to see us subjected to sin, failure, error, poverty, misery, marginalization, ignorance, violence.
  2. FREE TO GET OUT OF ALL LIMITATIONS: Free to believe in all God's promises to those who walk according to His Word, knowing that to all who seek the Righteousness of the Kingdom of God, all things that are in need will be added to them ( Matthew 6.33)
  3. FREE TO DREAM: In Christ we can dream of a better life for ourselves and our children. To dream of a better job, to dream of a better future.
  4. FREE TO ASK THE LORD FOR OUR DREAMS: We now have free access to the Throne of Grace to ask our Heavenly Father to help us walk in holiness, make the best decisions, act wisely in the upbringing of children, have Wisdom to get a better job, wisdom to deal with our relatives, brothers, etc ...
  5. WE ARE TRULY FREE BECAUSE: But He (Christ) was wounded for our transgressions, he was struck by our iniquities, he suffered in our place, and thanks to his wounds we received peace and were healed.6 "We were all lost, as sheep do. It seemed good to him, but God sent back to his faithful servant the punishment we deserved. Isaiah 53: 5-6 BLA.

CONCLUSION:

In Christ we have Freedom for a new life, free from sin, free from Evil and free from all human misery. In Christ we have total freedom.
