+ Study. Notes on Galatians 1 & 2. By Fabian Massa.

Translated from Spanish to English with Google translator.

Specially prepared for Alfa & Omega Church.

As we saw in the Introduction to Galatians [1], the churches of Galatia were founded by Paul on his first missionary journey (Theory South: Antioch Psidia, Derbe, Lystra and Iconium), which took place before 1 Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15), ie before 50 AD

The purpose of this note is to show you. The need to study the Bible with a historical approach, both chronologically and in the sense of being able to follow a narrative (story) which is told from different angles in two or more different books. In this case from Galatians, I told Paul (experience in 1st person) Acts whose author was Lucas (3rd person narration).

  1. Review Galatians 1

A. Galatians 1.1-4

1) 1.1 Wave Paul identifies himself as the author of the Charter, and testifies that his ministry comes from God. Is answering his critics that while it is true that not part of the 12 (cf. Acts 1.21-22), his ministry was given by Christ.
2) 1.2 Vision Church throughout the letter Paul communicates what the corporate vision of the Church of Antioch.
3) Blessing of Paul, as we saw in the Introduction, the Apostle wishes that peace and grace of God be upon them.

B. Purpose of Charter 10 1.6

1) 1.6-7 knot entire letter is "There is one Gospel, that of Grace"
2) Paul declares curse on anyone who misrepresents the truth: We are saved by the unmerited grace of God who gave Himself in Jesus to pay for our sin and thus give us eternal life. "
3) Paul's response to those who attacked: The Judaizers accused Paul of preaching a gospel light, because for them being saved "by faith alone" was not much, so they insisted on adding the works of the Law . Like the Judaizers today, to be saved is not enough to believe, we must also do works.

C. Personal testimony of Paul: 1.11-24

1) 1.11-12 Paul reaffirms that his conversion was the exclusive work of Jesus, who is on the road to Damascus (Acts 9.4-5)
2) 1.13-14 The Apostle testifies to how he behaved when his name was Saul, how involved and nodded stoning of Stephen (Acts 7.54-60); which was a major player in the persecution that arose immediately afterwards in Jerusalem (Acts 8.3); and got authorization from the high priest to persecute the Church in Damascus (Acts 9.1-2).
3) 1.15-16 also talks of predestination of salvation "From the womb"
4) 1.17 Account stay in Arabia and his return to Damascus where he remained for three years.
5) 1.18-24 tells his first visit to Jerusalem, where he spent fifteen days with Peter and James. Upon completion of his visit, he went back to the region of Syria, without preaching in Judea.

2. Review Galatians 2

1. 2.1 14 years after his conversion, (the story comes from chapter 1), ie 11 years after his first journey, Paul returns to visit the Church of Jerusalem, with Barnabas and Titus (Sent by the Church of Antioch, again corporate figure).

2. 2.2A Paul says that he returned to Jerusalem in obedience to a revelation of the Holy Spirit. To understand why, we must go to Acts 14.21-25 which tells Paul on his return to Antioch from his 1st Missionary Journey (Acts 13 and 14 complete) passes through the cities of Southern Galatia (Antioch Psidia, Lystra, Derbe and Iconium) to strengthen the disciples and appoint elders in flamboyant churches. Once they returned to Antioch in Syria, the "base" of Paul, are the following situation: "Some men came from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the brothers:" Unless you are circumcised, according to the tradition of Moses, can not be saved. "" Paul and Barnabas had a major confrontation with the Judaizers (Acts 15.2) the Church met to discuss this issue and decided (corporately, cf. Acts 15.3 a) Paul and Barnabas and some other believers, go up to Jerusalem to discuss the matter with the apostles and elders. (Acts 15.2B).

3. 2.2B that Paul went to Jerusalem and presented his gospel to the authorities in Jerusalem (Acts 15.3-4) But mostly the Church had a Judaizing vision (Acts 15.5-6), as even James (Santiago) was in favor this position (see Gal 2.12 Judaizing friends of James).

4. 2.3-5 The Judaizers claimed circumcise Titus (Acts 15.5-6) but the tough stance of Paul in the gospel of the New Covenant prevented them. He was also decisive defense of Grace Peter did in Acts 15.7-11 ends up being a doctrinal statement: "11 Rather, as they (the Gentiles - Testimony of Peter's visit to the house of Cornelius - Acts 10) we believe we are saved by the grace of our Lord Jesus. "

5. 2.7-10 Paul says: 7th On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted me to preach the gospel to the Gentiles, in the same way that had been entrusted to Peter preach to the Jews. This is a summary of what happened in Acts 15.12-21, where James takes a political position clearly states that since Jews already have a preacher Law of Moses each Sabbath (Acts 15.21) so the Gentiles not nothing being required to refrain from idolatry, sexual immorality, eating blood (drowning) and to remember the poor (Acts 15.19-20). Jacobo establishes a truce and separates the waters: We will go to the Jews and you (Paul and yours) to the Gentiles; but no representation doctrine like Peter did in Acts 15.7-11.

6. 2.11-14 Peter believed in the gospel of grace and had defended at the Council of Jerusalem, as we saw in the previous section. However, when the Judaizing "friends of James" visited Antioquia, Pedro was afraid of them. Paul strongly rebukes. But it is much more of a challenge to Peter, it's definitely settle a doctrinal base theme: "No two Gospels, one for the Gentiles and another for the Jews, there is only one, that of Grace." So in Galatians 3.28 Paul says: In Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, only Christians.

7. 2.15 In this verse we can see the difference of thoughts: To Jewish thought, linked to the law, all non-Jewish (they did not know and live fulfilling the rituals of the Law, are "sinners"). That is why Paul tells Peter: "15" We are Jews by birth and not "Gentile sinners". It is the same concept as we see in Matthew 9.11: "11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples: Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners" The concept of the Jewish sinner is to be ritually impure.

8. 2.16-21 Paul makes a strong defense of Grace and gives a logical reason to their doctrine: "21 I do not frustrate the grace of God. If righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing. ' "

D. Conclusions.

1) The dissension and partisanship occurred (and will continue) in the Church of Christ. How should you handle someone to defend a position? Corporately, seeking consensus and basing all defenses based on the Word, because this way you get to the truth.

2) If you're standing in the Truth, you can face any power structure: Paul confronted Peter, one of the 12, who had been chosen by the Church as a natural leader. He also faced James, which was nothing more and nothing less than brother (as natural) of Jesus and principal of the Church of Jerusalem.

3) Paul was affirmed in Scripture and supported corporately: To move forward today against the power groups who have taken to the Church of Christ with Judaizing attitudes with false doctrine (prosperity gospel, Believe and receive, gospel "The rosy life "Cults Panchos [2]" and other aberrations, do it with Truth and corporately as a church.

4) So to keep preparing for the big day when we must face the anointed and false apostles, false teachers and false prophets coming years distorting the truth, searching for its own benefit.

5) The dissension and partisanship occurred (and will continue) in the Church of Christ. How should you handle someone to defend a position? Corporately, seeking consensus and basing all defenses based on the Word, because this way you get to the truth.
